The Thompsonville Area Revitalization Project (TARP) is pleased to announce its participation in Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)’s Public Spaces Community Places Program to help raise the funds necessary to complete TARP’s Thompsonville Junction Trailhead Project in Thompsonville, Michigan.
Construction of Phase One of this two-phase project began on December 1, 2025 with the Visitor’s Pavilion, picnic area, bicycle parking and repair area. Plans are underway to begin Phase Two of the project this summer, which includes completing campground renovations and landscaping. The Thompsonville Junction, a historically significant site where two major rail lines once intersected, played a pivotal role in the development of Benzie County and Northwest Michigan. TARP’s vision is to honor that legacy by creating a modern, accessible trailhead that serves as a focal point for the region. The pavilion is designed with four ADA compliant bathrooms, two with showers and a covered outdoor picnic area. The campground is registered with the State of Michigan DNR. It will have 10 campsites, 2 of which were designed to be ADA compliant. TARP has set a goal of raising $50,000 on or before July 19, 2026 and if successful, that amount will be matched by the MEDC. The estimated cost of the entire project is $1,300,000.
TARP, a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 2021, is dedicated to undertaking projects that improve the quality of life for all people in the greater Thompsonville area. The Trailhead Project has garnered significant interest and financial support from area residents, businesses, municipalities, and philanthropists. To date, TARP has successfully raised over $1,200,000 dollars for the project.
“The Trailhead Project is a volunteer-based effort to bring about a transformational change in the Thompsonville area community.” said Charles Kraus, TARP president. “By focusing on the rich rail history of the Village, we hope to transform that legacy into a positive force for community improvement. We envision this project attracting visitors, new businesses, and new residents, while also encouraging further infrastructure improvements in the village core.”
